Causes of Death in Hospitalised Human Immunodefi ciency Virus (HIV)-infected Patients at a National Referral Centre in Singapore: A Retrospective Review

چکیده
Introduction: Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has improved outcomes for individuals infected with human immunodefi ciency virus (HIV). This study describes the causes of death in hospitalised HIV-positive patients from 2008 to 2010 in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the national referral centre for HIV management in Singapore. Materials and Methods: Data were retrospectively collected from HIV-positive patients who died in Tan Tock Seng Hospital from January 2008 to December 2010. Results: Sixty-seven deaths occurred in the study period. A majority of patients died of non-acquired immune defi ciency syndrome (AIDS)-defi ning illnesses (54.7%). The median CD4 count was 39.5 (range, 20.0 to 97.0), and 7 patients had HIV viral loads of <200 copies/mL. There were 27 deaths due to opportunistic infections, 27 due to non AIDS-defi ning infections, 4 due to non AIDS-associated malignancies. This study also describes 3 deaths due to cardiovascular events, and 1 due to hepatic failure. Patients who had virologic suppression were more likely to die from non AIDS-defi ning causes. Conclusion: Causes of death in HIV-positive patients have changed in the HAART era. More research is required to further understand and address barriers to testing and treatment to further improve outcomes in HIV/AIDS. Ann Acad Med Singapore 2012;41:571-6

Causes of death and factors associated with early death among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons in Singapore: pre-highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and Peri-HAART.
INTRODUCTION Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has greatly changed the epidemiology of human immunodefi ciency virus (HIV) mortality. The aim of this study is to compare the causes of death and factors associated with early death in HIV-infected persons in the pre- and peri-highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) periods. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a retrospective revi...

The study of tumor viruses paves the way for understanding the mechanisms of virus pathogenesis, including those involved in establishing infection and dissemination in the host tumor affecting immune-compromised patients. The processes ranging from viral infection to progressing malignancy are slow and usually insufficient for establishment of transformed cells that develop cancer in only ...
متن کاملAcute retroviral syndrome mimics dengue in Singapore.
Dear Editor, Both dengue and acute human immunodefi ciency virus-1 (HIV-1) can cause a febrile illness associated with myalgias, rash and blood count abnormalities, as noted in a single case report.1 In Singapore, suspected cases of dengue are usually managed as outpatients without confi rmatory testing, so acute HIV-1 may be misdiagnosed.2 If routine confi rmatory testing for dengue-like illne...
متن کاملHepatitis B and Hepatitis C Virus Co-infection among Human Immunodefi ciency Virus Infected Patients of Tripura
Background: India has the third largest number of individuals with human immunodefi ciency virus (HIV)/acquired immune defi ciency syndrome after South Africa and Nigeria. Co-infection of HIV with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the hepatitis C viruses (HCV) is a common event due to the similar routes of transmission. The study is designed to evaluate the status of co-infection by HBV, HCV viru...
